Just listened to the Creature Features cast and I wanted to correct a mistake that’s very commonly made concerning the FX for John Carpenter’s remake of The Thing: While Stan Winston did contribute work to the film, Rob Bottin is the genius responsible for The Thing’s FX. Winston was brought on as a sub-team to create the lumpy, skinless dog creature in the kennels (the lopsided one that sprouts two arms which then pull it up into the rafters) when it became clear that the workload was way too much for Bottin’s crew (or any crew, for that matter) to handle single-handedly. Everything else in that movie – it’s all Rob. Of course, nothing against Stan Winston – he’s a giant in the field – but Rob Bottin had to do a lot of cocaine to get all that stuff done, nearly having a nervous breakdown, and he deserves a lot of credit as one of the great pioneers of the Make-Up FX field.
Good call. Rob Bottin was also responsible for the memorable puppet effects in Total Recall, but I never knew this about “The Thing.”
