This Thursday we’ll be recording episode 21 of the New York Geekcast, all about cult films and the fanatical and bizarre rituals that surround them. We’ll also be compiling our top 10 list of cult films.

If you have anything you’d like to ask/share/add, please leave us a comment!

I’m just going to list some of my favorite movies which I have been TOLD fit into the cult film genre (but I’m not really sure):

    KRULL!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Spinal Tap
    Heathers
    Anything Monty Python
(I wouldn’t consider this “cult”, but whatever, some people do)
    MST3K (the movie)
    The Big Lebowski
Basket Case (have yet to see it in its entirety, but thanks to the Creature Features Geekcast episode, I’m eagerly awaiting its arrival into my life)

    I second MST3K: The Movie!

    Does Spaceballs count?

Please make the case for MST3k the movie. I don’t really consider it cult, although it is tons quotable. Hmm.

    1. “MST3K : The Movie” is a cult classic because anyone who is in love with the movie is seriously IN LOVE WITH THE MOVIE. You don’t “sorta like” MST3K, you either think it’s amazing, or you don’t really care.

    2. The movie in “MST3K : The Movie” is “This Island Earth”, which is in itself considered to be a cult Sci-Fi classic (side note: it’s also the movie that ET watches while Elliot is at school).

    3. I consider the fact that there are many successful special screenings/events of MST3K in theaters is enough to suggest that it has a cult following.

I guess my point was that there was little difference between the movie and the show. But I suppose it is set apart to a certain degree.
