You all seem to have such strong opinions either for or against Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal. I saw them recently, but they didn’t leave much of an impression. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?!! Should I be feigning nostalgia for something I don’t really care about. Do I need have exaggeratedly pro or con opinion regarding niche movies to establish territory in the sacred subculture you call geekdom? Why can’t we just be lukewarm about this stuff?
Originally we didn’t have strong opinions about either movie, Dave and I simply stated that we thought both movies were overrated and were actually bad.
It’s EVERYONE else who reacted strongly to said opinion.
I felt lukewarm about both movies until I was asked and then people didn’t agree with my reaction.
I don’t think we have strong reactions to everything, but then again, if we were lukewarm about most things…why have a podcast?
I think it’s the natural geek inclination to strongly defend your opinions. As giant nerds, we’re all very protective of what we love, and the feedback that we got from listeners when Nelson and I said what we said about these two films exemplifies that.
I think it’s fine to have lukewarm feelings about certain properties or works — for example, I don’t really care for LOTR — but I think it’s really exciting when people have strong, well-founded opinions on the things they love, and they make those opinions known. Just don’t expect us to back down if we feel differently.
Obviously, Nelson and other David, I am both bad at listening and being a heckler. I still love your show and will have something better to say next time!!!
