Beware my power… Green Lantern’s light!

A Green Lantern movie has been known to be in the works for sometime now. We knew Ryan Reynolds, who snuck his way into movie geekdom by playing Wade Wilson/Deadpool, was attached. We had, also, heard rumors that this would be the first in a series of movies made to counteract Marvel’s Avengers movie line. But DC/Warner Bros. remained eerily silent about the film. Well, hold on to your power ring, Kilowog, cuz here it comes:

The Greenest of Lanterns

The Greenest of Lanterns

Entertainment Weekly published a “First Look” at the new Green Lantern movie this week. Front Page news, no less. More images of the film can be found over at iFanboy.

Now, I’ve never been a huge fan of the character. I like the idea behind him and the Green Lantern Corp however, his history is bogged down in continuity and the amount of different personalities who took over the role are incredibly varied, to the point where fanboys violently hate one or more incarnations. It’s not that I don’t want to like him, it’s that his whole world confuses me.

Enter the Green Lantern movie.

Right off the bat, the costume strike me as odd. As with a lot of comic book movies, designers feel the need to add something extra to the costume design (Bat Nipples anyone?). They forget the simplicity of the original design. In the case with Green Lantern, it’s that strange ribbing on the costume. It almost looks like he’s covered in varicose veins. You’re welcome for that visual, by the way.

That all being said, I am still somewhat optimistic about this movie. Okay, sure, Ryan Reynolds is not great. And the supporting cast is pretty bland, except for Peter Sarsgaard (Just say his name out loud. “Sarsgaard.”). And comic book movies, in general, tend to suck. All that taken into consideration, I’m hoping to be pleasantly surprised, ala Iron Man.  However, I’ll wait until the reviews come out.

It might not be too bad I think Geoff Johns is the new consultant for movies like this and comic book properties in the main stream media. He has his stamp all over the series Smallvile, just look at the JSA episode.

I’m only dissapointed because this isn’t an Orange lantern movie… I want to see Larfleeze on the big screen!

I kind of agree about costume changes in general — sometimes they should just leave well enough alone. Though I think the mask looks alright, and I’m glad he’s got the white eyes.

As someone who’s equally confused about the Green Lantern’s history, I’m hoping the movie is good so that I don’t have to care about sifting through the comics’ storyline.
